Spike Tandem:

The End of Compromise Between Dark Ride and Roller Coaster

Summary

In the world of theme park attractions, the combination of compelling storytelling and physical thrills is the “Holy Grail.” There have long been impressive attempts to unite both worlds. A look behind the scenes, however, reveals that these systems are technically extremely complex and ultimately consist of a succession of more or less limiting compromises.

With the Spike® Tandem, we present a technological turning point: the first system that natively fuses both disciplines without any inherent system limitations.

The Pitfall of Mechanical Dependency

Existing hybrid systems rely on a multitude of external hardware. For technical and cost reasons, friction wheels or linear motors (LSM) are deployed only at discrete points for acceleration ahead of coaster sections. The vehicle must cover the remainder of the track under gravity. This constrains the creative possibilities:

  • Gravity dictates the layout: The dependency on height, speed and curve radii is dictated by physics. Because speed depends on elevation, fast curves at the bottom must inevitably be designed with large radii. Gravity therefore reduces both design freedom and the ability to make efficient use of building space.
  • Storytelling under constraint: The narrative must adapt to the physics of the track. A genuine pause, a sudden retreat or dynamic tempo changes within a scene are mechanically barely feasible - or achievable only with extreme effort. As a result, the coaster section remains separated from the dark ride experience, reducing the potential for storytelling.
  • Maintenance-intensive infrastructure: A multitude of drives, sensors and brakes along the entire track means sprawling maintenance effort directly at the track - often in hard-to-access, themed areas.

Software-Defined Freedom Instead of Track-Mounted Hardware

With the Spike Tandem, all the intelligence - propulsion, control and multimedia - resides in the vehicle itself. The vehicle does not roll passively along the rails; it is an autonomous actor.

1. Massive Simplification of the Technology

  • Complete integration of dark ride and roller coaster: Spike drives any track from the horizontal to inversions under full software control. There are no handover points, no system transitions, no requirement for additional hardware. All technology is built into the vehicle and permanently available for every action.
  • Dramatically simplified maintenance: The number of components on the ride is minimised. An affected vehicle is simply routed to the maintenance area and serviced there comfortably and efficiently, while operations on the track continue undisturbed.

2. The Layout Follows the Story

  •  Optimal use of space: Thanks to its 1,050 Nm rack-and-pinion drive, Spike operates in the most confined spaces. Inclines, descents or flat sections are traversed independently of gravity and kinetic energy.
  • Centimetre-precise perfection & real-time sync: The system knows the exact position of the vehicle at all times and transmits this continuously to external show control systems. The result is perfect synchronisation with animatronics and media content - to the centimetre, at any speed, without additional effort.
  •  Boundless storytelling: Whether the dragon creeps forward, attacks, pauses for a moment and then flees - with Spike, this is purely a matter of the drive profile, not the track geometry. Each vehicle can run its own individual profile and react spontaneously to guest interactions.
  •  Theming without obtrusive emergency walkways: Our fully automated recovery vehicle eliminates the need for additional evacuation paths or cherry picker access routes. The immersion of the story world remains perfectly sealed.
  • Agility through software: Seasonal events such as Halloween or new requirements years later are realised through simple software updates. New ride characters are implemented at the click of a button.

3. The Vehicle Itself Becomes the Story

  • Form follows fantasy: The slender Spike Tandem silhouette (1-1-1-1 seating arrangement) with a high GRP content allows for authentic theming that far exceeds the design possibilities of conventional coaster vehicles. It is the natural basis for anything that can be ridden, as well as for aerodynamic designs: mystical dragons, futuristic speederbikes, flying carpets through to sleek Formula 1 bolides. The technology disappears entirely beneath the design.
  • Comprehensive multimedia power: Thanks to continuous power supply via busbars, full energy is available at every metre of track. No battery limits, no charge cycles. The vehicle becomes a mobile high-tech stage with onboard sound, lighting, fog and other show effects, video cameras, as well as a touchscreen or head-up display and buttons for guest interaction. The onboard multimedia PC is freely programmable and adapts the deployment of show elements to the respective theming.
  • An experience for everyone: Thanks to the self-tensioning, continuously monitored lap belt - rated by TÜV as one of the safest restraint systems on the market - Spike Tandem offers exceptional openness for the widest range of guest requirements:
    • Height flexibility: The system is certified for guests from 1.00 m to 2.00 m in height, making it a true family all-rounder.
    • Shared adventure: Close togetherness rather than side-by-side separation gives the whole family an intense group experience. The slender design gives every passenger a clear view past the person in front, offering everyone th e same perspective on external projections and animatronics.
    • Maximum inclusion: Dedicated, TÜV-certified ADA harnesses enable a remarkably wide spectrum of guests with physical disabilities to enjoy a safe and full ride experience.

The First True Symbiosis

A look at the direct comparison with conventional hybrid systems illustrates the specific advantages of the Spike Tandem:

Feature

Spike® Tandem

Conventional Systems

Propulsion & Control

Permanent rack-and-pinion drive; 100% control over speed and direction at every centimetre.

Mix of discrete drives (friction wheel/LSM) and gravity. High drive complexity in show sections. Block sections.

Layout Freedom

Independent of gravity. Braking, acceleration and direction changes possible always and everywhere. Even inversions pose no problem.

Gravity dictates the layout. Physics prevents optimal use of building space and reduces design freedom.

Show Precision

Centimetre-precise position data in real time for perfect sync with animatronics.

Dependent on block sections and external sensors.

Interaction

Comprehensive interaction extending to influencing the drive profile.

Interaction limited to point collection.

Infrastructure / Aesthetics

Clean track. No emergency walkways needed thanks to autonomous recovery vehicle. Full immersion.

Secured evacuation routes and catwalks disrupt sightlines and theming.

Power Supply

Continuous busbars for unlimited multimedia power (sound, lighting, effects).

Often battery-powered or limited; charge cycles constrain onboard effects.

Maintenance Effort

Decentralised; all technology built into the vehicle. Maintenance conveniently in the service bay.

High; numerous sensors and drives along the entire track require servicing.

IP Adaptation

Slender tandem silhouette; ideal for authentic straddle theming (bikes, dragons, F1).

Wide standard chassis; often forces unfavourable proportions for IP designs.

Inclusion & Target Group

Maximum openness: 1.00 m to 2.00 m height; certified ADA harnesses for a remarkably wide range of guests with physical disabilities.

System- and vehicle-dependent.

Future-Proofing

Software-defined. New drive profiles and story updates purely through programming.

Changes to ride characteristics often require mechanical modifications to the hardware.

Other systems are either dark rides with coaster moments or coasters with show sections - and thus remain compromises. Spike® Tandem dissolves this divide. It is the Immersion Coaster - the first true dark ride that is simultaneously a real roller coaster. A system that transcends the boundary between technical feasibility and creative vision.

Spike stands for technical perfection and a radical expansion of what an attraction can be.

Less complexity on the track. More magic in the experience.
